My Sweetheart

The comfort of his warm embrace
The tenderness of his gentle touch
The warmth is smile radiates
Precious moments spent together
True honesty and sincerity
All summed up when his lips softly caress mine

Tears for Water

I’m normally not much of a poetry reader, but I did check out Alicia Keys’ book, Tears for Water. It’s not a surprise that she’s written some heartfelt poetry with true meaning (just look at her lyrics). My favorites from the book are “Unfilled Keys”, “Mind Sex” and “Love with a Shot of Distance”. The book does include lyrics from her previously released albums, but I must say that even some of these seemed to jump off the page in a written context with no melody to hum along with them. I would definitely recommend checking this book out!

His Thoughts

This beautiful woman I love inside and out
Is now the only creature I think about

Who knew I’d be the one she’d come to hate
Because the pain I caused made her heart break

But the distance between us was just too much to bear
It just didn’t seem fair not to have her there

Was it the right choice to make, or did I make a mistake
Man, it wasn’t my intent for her heart to break

Now all I can do is hope that in time
This woman says yes and chooses to be mine

Tough Love

How can I hate someone I love
When he’s truly a blessing sent from above
Coping with the duality of my emotions for him is a struggle everyday
It seems like I can’t do much more than pray

All I want is to spend time with him every day
That’s why it hurt so much when he chose those fateful words to say
“Let’s just be friends” drove a knife through my heart
After that, my soul was on the verge of falling apart

But being the sista I am, I had to appear to be strong
I have to do what I can to move on
None of that begging for him to take me back
Because black motivated women are having none of that

But that doesn’t mean the pain isn’t still there
Like the though of him never again running his fingers through my hair
Now I know just loving him isn’t enough
Why does love have to be so tough

Open Mic Night @ The Luxury Lounge

I must give a shout out to one of the blogs that I read on a regular basis. Sitting in the Lap of Luxury Lounge is written by one of my homegirls. She truly has a way with words and can freestyle, too. (If you didn’t know, now you know!) So, follow this link and check out Open Mic Night at the Luxury Lounge.

True Friends

I wrote this before my high school graduation. My friends and I had a blast, especially senior year. And even though it's 6 years later, we all still keep in touch. Luv you guys!

The year has come, and the year has gone.
I've been thinking about it all night long.

Friendships have been blossoming like flowers in the sun.
And other friendships have just begun.
From different backgrounds we all came,
But we did find some interests that were the same.
Whether at Chili's or the movies or chillin' in the sun
We always seemed to have so much fun.
We've been through rough times that have been very bad
And it was even worse when everyone was sad
We always tried to work things through,
But sometimes we just didn't know what to do.
Out of this bad did come much good.
We became even closer than we thought we would

In some ways the others became essential to survive
We wouldn't know what to do if one of them died
There were so many good emotions that we felt in our hearts
That we could never have imagined being apart

But, that unfortunate time will come some day
All we can do now is pray
The love we've shared has been so strong
Nothing could ever replace this bond

Boys

A heart is not a play thing
A heart is not a toy
But if you want it broken
Just give it to a boy
Boys they like to play with things
To see what makes them run
But when it comes to kissing
They do it just for fun
Boys never give their hearts away
They play us girls for fools
They wait until we give our hearts
And then they play it cool
You wonder where he is at night
You will wonder if he's true
One moment you will be happy
One moment you will be blue
If you get a chance to see him
Your heart begins to dance
Your life revolves around him
There's nothing like romance
And then it starts to happen
You worry day and night
You see, my friend, you're losing him
It never turns out right
Boys are great, though immature
The price you pay is high
He may seem sweet and gorgeous
But remember, he's a guy
Don't fall in love with just a boy
That takes a lot of nerve
You see, my friend, you need a man
To get what you deserve
So when you think that you're in love
Be careful if you can
Before you give your heart away
Make sure that he's a man
(Although I did not write this poem, I'd like to dedicate this blog entry to the Wack Pack.)

Welcome to the Poetry Corner!

Normally, I would say that I don’t have a creative bone in my body. (I don’t know many accountants who do.) But every blue moon the mood hits and I have to get my words on paper. So here in Val’s Poetry Corner you will see my rare works of poetry. You can also find poems that I’ve read and liked and perhaps even ones that were written for me. And guest spots are always welcome. Just let me know!

Stay tuned…
